USA Shooting: Athletes Earn 10 Medals At 2023 ISSF World Championship Baku

Team USA shooters last month set three new world records and captured 10 championship medals at the 2023 ISSF World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Team USA’s Rachel Tozier and Derrick Mein landed the silver medal in the Mixed Trap Team event at the 2023 ISSF World Championship, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, last month.

USA Shooting athletes earned a total of 10 medals and set three new world records at the 2023 International Shooting Sports Federation World Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan, held August 14 to September 1.

The USA Shooting athletes medaled in the following: 

  • Gold in Men’s Skeet Team: Vincent Hancock, Christian Elliott and Dustan Taylor 
  • Gold in Mixed Skeet Team and a new world record: Vincent Hancock and Austen Smith
  • Gold in Women’s Skeet Team and a new world record: Dania Vizzi, Austen Smith and Samantha Simonton 
  • Gold and a new world record in Women’s 50m Rifle 3-Position: Sagen Maddalena, Sarah Beard and Mary Tucker 
  • Gold in Men’s Trap Team: Will Hinton, Derrick Mein and Derek Haldeman 
  • Silver in Women’s Skeet: Dania Vizzi  
  • Silver in Mixed Trap Team: Rachel Tozier and Derrick Mein 
  • Bronze in Women’s 50m Rifle 3-Position: Sagen Maddalena
  • Bronze in 300m Standard Rifle Open, Men’s 300m Prone Rifle: Tim Sherry

In addition to the impressive medal count, Team USA athletes set three new world records. The Mixed Skeet Team set a new record after Hancock shot a 74 in the qualification round combined with Smith’s 75 to equal a total of 149/150. The duo then shot the gold medal match where they triumphed over the Ukrainian Team.

Smith also helped set a second world record with teammates Vizzi and Simonton in the Women’s Skeet Team event. Vizzi shot a 122/125, while Smith fired 122/125, and Simonton 121/125, giving them a combined score of 365/375, enough to best the Italian team in second place with 360/372.

The Women’s 50m Rifle 3-Position Team World Champion title was earned by Sagen Maddalena, Mary Tucker and Sarah Beard. Their three qualification scores not only earned them gold, but also set a new team world record of 1774-102X. Their individual scores were Maddalena 594-42X, Tucker 592-32X and Beard 588-28X.

The Shooting Paralympic Sports World Championships takes place next in Lima, Peru, from September 19-29. After the Paralympic World Championships, Team USA will head to the 2023 Pan American and Para Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
