With five shooting events now complete after three days of competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, U.S. shooting athletes still have 10 rifle, pistol and shotgun events remaining to earn medals in during the next seven days in France. All Paris 2024 shooting events are held at the Chateauroux Shooting Center, which is located about 170 miles south of Paris.
Thus far, the U.S. shooting team’s best finish has come from Sagen Maddalena, who captured fourth place this morning in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event.
Maddalena, who is from Groveland, California, earned her spot in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle final after posting a score of 631.4 in qualification.
Her U.S. teammate, Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mary Tucker, also competed in Women’s 10m Air Rifle, exiting the qualification round in 32nd place after firing a score of 625.2.
As for Women’s 10m Air Pistol, Team USA shooters Alexis Lagan and Katelyn Abeln competed in the event on Saturday, July 27. While neither shooter fired scores to reach the top eight and the event final, both posted admirable scores, with Abeln shooting 570-16X to land in 24th place and Lagan right behind her in 25th place with a score of 570-15X.
Also on Saturday, Mary Tucker and Rylan Kissell paired up to compete in the Mixed Team Air Rifle event, exiting qualification in 13th place with a score of 626. Another pair of U.S. shooters— Sagen Maddalena and Ivan Roe—competed in Mixed Team Air Rifle, walking away from the qualification round in 18th place with 624.9.
In addition, Ivan Roe and Rylan Kissell both competed in Men’s 10m Air Rifle, exiting qualification tied for 34th place with scores of 626.3.
The trio of Ivan Roe, Rylan Kissell and Katelyn Abeln made their first appearance at the Olympic Games this week in France.
Today’s competitions at the Chateauroux Shooting Center marked the end of the Paris 2024 Air Rifle and Air Pistol events, as well as the start of qualification for Men’s Trap. The Men’s Trap qualification round will continue for a second day on Tuesday, July 30, with the Men’s Trap final to be fired at 9:30 a.m. (Paris time). Women’s Trap also kicks off tomorrow for the first day of qualification, with day two of qualification and the Women’s Trap final scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31.
U.S. shooter Derrick Mein is currently in the hunt for a Paris 2024 Men’s Trap medal after the first day of qualification. He noted how it’s quite an honor just to make it to the Olympics.
“We’re competing against the best of the best out here,” he said. “There are plenty of capable people here that come in, and you just hope to have a chance.”
Heading into tomorrow and the second round of Men’s Trap qualification, Mein sits in 12th place among the field of 30 shooters. His teammate, Will Hinton, is in 29th place.
“I know that I will be in the hunt going into tomorrow,” Mein said. “And that’s really all you can ask for on day one, is to give yourself a chance.”
Later this week, three-time Olympic gold medalist Vincent Hancock will begin his hunt for a fourth Men’s Skeet medal. That event will kick off on Friday, August 2, followed by Women’s Skeet on Sunday, August 3.
Shooting Sports USA will continue to report from the Paris 2024 Games until the final shooting event, Mixed Team Skeet, an event making its Olympic debut this year in France. The Mixed Team Skeet event is scheduled for Monday, August 5, with the final at 9:00 a.m. (Paris time). Check back often for updates and the latest Paris 2024 Olympics news.
